Where Will I Find Asbestos

Range of asbestos

Firstly we should ask “What is asbestos?” as this is not a straight forward question. There are many different types of asbestos. Firstly, asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous material which was used in buildings up until the 1980s, and it is still found in homes, schools, office blocks and hospitals today.

Then where can asbestos be found, it generally asbestos lurks in products such as insulation, ceiling tiles, pipe insulation, boilers and sprayed coatings. Using asbestos in residential buildings was very common in Australia, along with other countries, between the 1940s and the 2000s, before all production of the material ceased and banned on the 31st of December 2004.

The team here at Asbestos Brisbane and BBM Contracts solve asbestos contaminations around homes and work places taking the threat away from places around Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, the Gold Coast and Queensland properties.

  • Fiberious sheeting

When speaking about asbestos, it generally falls under two categories, friable and non-friable, also known as bonded. Friable asbestos is considered the more dangerous of the two as it contains (ACM) which can easily be crumbled by hand when dry and reduced to powder. The more friable the material is, the more likely it will release asbestos fibres, increasing the risk of exposure if disturbed and breathed in.

Then there is bonded asbestos items which is generally posing a lower risk, the asbestos is firmly bound in the makeup of the affected material and is therefore unlikely to release dangerous asbestos fibres into the environment if left undisturbed. Bonded asbestos is typically made up of asbestos fibres along with a bonding compound (cement). It cannot be crumbled, crushed or reduced to a powder by hand pressure when dry.

Types of bonded asbestos materials
  • Downpipes
  • Corrigated fiber sheeting
  • Fencing
